Backstory

"India is full of contradictions. The feeling of spirituality is hastily tested by the surrounding reality. Nothing is what it seems to be, at least in the way that we foreigners want to understand it. The girl is not painting a heart on the blue wall. She is trying to erase it with a stick to prevent me from photographing it."

From Nuru Project curator JB Reed's blog post about Tomas Munita's print:

Some people argue that writing should not accompany photographs, that images must stand on their own. I find that perspective inflexible. For me, Tomas' backstory enriches his print immeasurably. He doesn't tell us what to think or feel. In fact, he cautions foreigners from drawing any conclusions at all. Instead, he gives us just enough information to turn the screw of curiosity to a delicious depth. He leaves me wondering: why does this girl not want Tomas to photograph the heart?
