"I actually shot this while on holiday in Brazil. I couldn't really afford the trip and spent a long time paying it off, but it was full of defining moments for me, including this one. On Ipanema Beach, we saw favela kids jumping into a canal that runs from Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas out into the sea. I hung around only a short while, maybe five minutes. Because I was using B&W film, it wasn't until I processed the negative that I saw diver's perfect figure, caught at just the right moment. Favela kids are notorious, but these guys were just having innocent fun. As more of the world's population migrates to the cities, into slums, ghettos, and favelas, it's important to remember that our capacity for joy is part of what makes us human. Occasionally, we all make that perfect leap."
