Backstory
"I was in Burma four months after thousands of monks stood up against the oppressive military junta, marching through the streets of Yangon and Mandalay while holding their begin bowls upside down. A monk's begging bowl carries a special cultural significance in Burma. Because they are not allowed possessions, monks process every morning from door to door with the bowls, begging for a bit of rice. Despite a life of hardship, Burmese people share their food with the monks and a special relationship exists between the groups. Thus, the monks' decision to protest in October 2007 sent a strong signal to the people: even apolitical monks, who typically concern themselves only with their spiritual goals, were standing up against the government. The government's subsequent crackdown was even more shocking as it's considered an unforgivable sin in Burma to use force against monks. Whenever I see a procession of Burmese monks now, I'm reminded of those events."
